The First Year Integration Conference (FYIC)

The First Year Integration Conference (FYIC) is a leadership development conference for first-year students looking to get more involved in their engineering student societies. It is an opportunity to learn about Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and Engineering Student Societies Council of Ontario (ESSCO), as well as develop leadership skills and meet new people. Thanks to the support of the Class of 1966, two RMC first-year students participated in this conference in order to introduce themselves to the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and get connected with the entire engineering community. Our goal is to use this conference as a main recruiting tool for RMC students to take on key leadership roles in RMC’s engineering society.

During these days of training, I believe that my understanding of the different engineering paths and aspects was deepened, and I developed a real passion for the development of my leadership abilities. Meeting peers from various universities played a big part in my progress as an engineer, since the field is small it is highly beneficial to work with as many people as possible and use different life experiences to further boost my learning potential. I sincerely thank the RMC Alumni Association and the Class of 1966 for funding this great opportunity.

Throughout the conference we had several presentations on traversing university life, applying for internships and resume building. Overall, many of these presentations had little applicability to me as naturally all information was focused on Civilian University, though it was quite interesting to see the difference between engineering at Civilian University and RMC. The First Year Integration Conference was a great opportunity to learn about applying for jobs and positions, the Ontario Society for Professional Engineers and network with some of the most driven people from other universities
