With generous support of the RMC Alumni Association, the Department of English, Culture, and Communication has been hosting a trip for Naval and Officer Cadets in the Winter term to the annual Kingston Canadian Film Festival (KCFF), the largest film festival dedicated to Canadian films.
KCFF screenings offer a wide range of genres, storytelling, and cultural perspectives from diverse filmmakers and have recently offered a strong selection of shorts, features, and documentaries from Indigenous creators and actors. The festival highlights emerging filmmakers as well as award-winning and audience favourite films. KCFF supports local artists by showcasing their films in a national context.
Naval and Officer Cadets can select films that complement their personal and academic interests, and they can participate in the post-film talks with filmmakers and actors. Attendance at the event contributes to the development of Cadets’ cultural intelligence and enables their intellectual and artistic appreciation for visual storytelling. In post-screening colloquia with ECC faculty, students critically interrogate and respond to the various forms and genres of film they have seen–films that expose students to a range of themes salient to their generation and to the Canadian and global imagination.
The movie that stuck out to me the most was Islands. The presentation of the tangibly realistic life of Joshua was almost realistic to a fault, but at the end proves to be a story worth watching. The realness and proximity of it all makes it a more impactful story of growth and change. -Timothy Bailey
I was absolutely stunned by the professionalism of the films. Every film had such a beautiful mixture of scenes and soundtracks which submerged the audience into the story. At times I even forgot I was in my dorm room. Instead, I was on the Maltese shoreline with Paolo and Carmen! I definitely count on participating again in the coming years and recommend the KCFF to anyone looking for genuine entertainment.
