Engineering Leadership into Law: The Career Journey of Matt McLeod, RMC 2007

From the parade square at the Royal Military College of Canada to the boardrooms of Canada’s most innovative companies, Matt McLeod (RMC 2007) has built an exceptional career defined by discipline, strategic insight, and leadership.

A graduate of RMC with a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering (2007) and later an MBA in Business and Commerce (2009), Matt’s academic foundation reflects a deep commitment to both technical excellence and business acumen. His time at RMC—alongside participation in RMC Rugby—helped instill the resilience, teamwork, and leadership values that would shape his professional journey.

Following graduation, Matt served as an Officer in the Canadian Forces, an experience that would become a defining asset throughout his civilian career. Drawing on his operational mindset and strong alumni network, he transitioned into the legal profession after earning his Juris Doctor from Western University in 2012, and later gaining bar admission in Ontario (2013) and New York (2014).

Today, Matt is a Partner at Dickinson Wright, where he leads the firm’s High‑Growth Companies Group in Toronto. He is recognized as one of Canada’s most experienced lawyers working at the intersection of corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and the defence industry, advising early‑stage and high‑growth companies through complex Seed and Series A financings.

What sets Matt apart is his rare blend of experience. Before joining Dickinson Wright, he served as an executive in private‑equity‑owned and regulated companies, including SaaS and cannabis enterprises, and worked as a lawyer in the New York City office of a major Canadian firm. This “inside‑out” perspective allows him to advise founders not just as legal counsel, but as a former operator who understands how businesses are built, scaled, and sold.

Over the course of his career, Matt has advised companies across a wide range of sectors—most notably defence—supporting capital raises, strategic acquisitions, and major transactions ranging from technology and education to agriculture and consumer brands. His work has included helping clients secure agreements with the Canadian Department of National Defence, underscoring his continued connection to Canada’s defence ecosystem.

Whether guiding founders through critical “Day One” legal decisions or preparing companies to be acquisition‑ready, Matt’s approach reflects the same principles emphasized at RMC: clarity, preparedness, and leadership under pressure. As he often notes, strong legal foundations are not a cost—but an investment in long‑term success.

Matt McLeod’s career is a powerful example of how the values forged at RMC—Truth, Duty, and Valour—continue to shape leaders well beyond military service. His journey from cadet to nationally recognized lawyer serves as an inspiration to current cadets and alumni alike.
