When the Royal Military Colleges of Canada Alumni Association Inc. (RMCAA) was founded through the merger of the RMC Club and the RMC Foundation in late 2021, a temporary word-based logo was developed.
In the three years since, members have not been shy about letting us know that this logo is not, to put it mildly, their cup of tea. So, the time has come at last to kick our temporary logo to the curb and develop a fresh, new look!
Creating a new logo is not without its challenges. There are some fundamental facts that need to be factored in. RMCAA is the voice of the alumni of all the Canadian Military Colleges, whether RMC St-Jean, RMC or Royal Roads. We are the alumni association for everyone who has attended a program at a CMC, undergraduate, post-graduate or continuing studies. So, our logo needs to resonate across all of those groups. Also, RMCAA has the challenge of being at once of all the Colleges and yet of none of them — the organization is distinct from the CMCs themselves and is independent of the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces.
And then there are some practical and aesthetic considerations. A new logo needs to be usable in all the ways that logos are used nowadays, whether that is in in digital formats or stitched onto a cap or sweatshirt! Coats of arms, for example, with their highly detailed drawings, are too complex to easily digitalize and scale down, and as a result less distinguishable, which makes them impractical to use as logos.
Last but not least, a new logo must be something that alumni will see as relevant and with which they would be proud to be associated.
So, we’ve developed a short, five-question survey to get some guidance from members on what is important in a new logo. If you saw the survey advertised on social media and have completed it already: thank you! If not, this is your chance. Please take three minutes now and cliquez ici to have your say!
